Similar to other State Universities of Maharashtra Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University was established on 1st July, 1989 by Act XX- of the Maharashtra State Legislature. The YCMOU has been recognized under section 12 (B) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. The jurisdiction of the University is the State of Maharashtra. The jurisdiction of the university, originally for the State of Maharashtra, has now been extended beyond this State and the university can now operate anywhere across the globe.  The YCMOU has its headquarters at Nashik and provides support to its learners through study centers, which are all over the State of Maharashtra. The degrees obtained from YCMOU can be considered as equivalent to the degrees of other state universities for the purpose of employment and promotion in institutes of State of Maharashtra and all other government approved government, semi-government, private institutes and various boards. It has been already declared that the graduates of YCMOU are held eligible for the examinations conducted by MPSC and UPSC. 

                The students can obtain the degrees of YCMOU, while obtaining the degree from other universities. Gopal Krishna Gokhale College, Kolhapur Study Centre of YCMOU provides the following courses – 

B. A, B. Com., B. Sc. (Industrial Science), Diploma (Industrial Science), M. Com., M. A. (Marathi), Computer Diploma Certificate Courses (6 Months) 

The Centre plays a significant role by giving opportunity to continue the education to the students who are deprived from the Mainstream of education or who are interested to continue education after a long gap or any student of 18 to 86 years of age. In consideration of the demand of skilled human resource by the instruction sector of Kolhapur, GKG Study Centre of YCMOU has been initiated B. Sc. in Industrial Science. 

Similarly, in order to provide the demands of skilled human resource with Computer Knowledge from the government and private industrial sector to enhance their productivity and quality, the YCMOU also offers the certificate courses. 

The Backward class students of YCMOU are also subject to the approval of the government scholarship.
